It is with a grave heart that we have to type this news, there is a blog post which is attacking a victim of white supremacist violence that took place in Charlottesville, VA. This violence took place over the weekend. It was shared more than 65,000 times over Facebook. But these posts are soon getting disappeared. The company exclaimed that these links on the Daily Stormer website violated the standards of its community and this requires automatic removal unless the post included a caption which condemns the article or even the publication, a haven for Nazis and white supremacists.
The post which is being circulated contains are series of personal attacks and comments against the victim Heather Heyer who passed away this Saturday after being hit by a car during the protest against the gathering of white supremacists. The driver responsible for the death of Heyer, James Alex Fields Jr., is now being held on charges which include a second-degree murder. Along with the death of an innocent, 19 other people were injured during the attack.
Facebook stepped in to aid the already dilapidating situation by declaring that any of the shares made of the Daily Stormer article which does not include a caption reproachful in nature will certainly be deleted. The company has a community operations team which reviews posts being shared on the platform. This determines their matter, context and if they come across anything which is against what they conveyed, then it will be immediately deleted. They will also remove the domain if required.
This step was taken as soon as the Daily Stormer lost its web host and its Youtube channel. Those accounts were deleted over similar terms and conditions. Facebook said that even though this might come off as unusual, but it has happened before. The current situation demands it so it will be executed. This will solely be done to curb the spread of White supremacist propaganda on the network. Although against their principle of checking or making an editorial judgement, the company thinks this modus operando is the dire need of the situation as a way to tackle it.
It is sad to see what we have come to when love should be the primary emotion to address every soul; we are making use of hate as a fuel to scare people. And if that doesn’t work, we come down to spread malice. It is high time that we took time and introspect our actions.
